The 2025 Hawaiian Historical Society Calendar

Hawai‘i ma ka pili kai, Hawai‘i at the water’s edge

Information about places helps us to make sense of, understand, and connect to our natural and cultural surroundings, especially if places no longer exist or have been dramatically altered by human or environmental changes. This year’s theme, Hawaiʻi ma ka pili kai, Hawaiʻi at the water’s edge, explores 12 significant shoreline places and cultural landmarks on the eight main Hawaiian Islands. In 2016 John Clark donated his Beaches of Hawai‘i Photo Collection to the Hawaiian Historical Society. These black and white images, captured by various photographers between 1974 and 1989, are part of John’s first four publications, Beaches of: the Big Island; Kauaʻi and Niʻihau; Maui; and Oʻahu. The photos for each month of our 2025 calendar were selected from this collection, with descriptions written by John.

The creation of the Hawaiian Historical Society calendar remains a point of great pride for the organization as the only compilation of Hawaii historical data edited each year and made accessible to the public. Proceeds from each calendar supports HHS’ ongoing preservation efforts for the historical material as well as future publications of this annual calendar.
