The 2022 Hawaiian Historical Society (HHS) calendar is now available! The theme for this historical calendar is drawn from a kapa-covered photograph album, recently donated to HHS, filled with photographs from Hawai‘i in the late 1800s. Kapi‘olani Park, with Lē‘ahi (Diamond Head) in the background, is featured on the cover of this year’s calendar. The image, taken from along Kalākaua Avenue before it had been paved, is one of many incredible images in the HHS collection.
In these striking black & white photographs, the 19th Century in Hawai‘i is explored through a wide range of subjects, including many rare images of Honolulu such as Kalākaua’s Coronation parade and ceremonies at ‘Iolani Palace in 1883. The calendar’s pages are filled with notes for significant dates and interesting facts about Hawaiʻi’s history. There is no other compendium of important historical dates in Hawai‘i, edited yearly and accessible to the public like the HHS Calendar; it has remained an important document noting the shifts in priorities for researchers and scholars working with the HHS collection.
Calendars are available on online for $16 (plus $3 for domestic shipping). Click here to order. Discounts are available for HHS Members and bulk orders through HHSOffice@hawaiianhistory.org.
