Hawaiian Historical Society (HHS) is excited to announce our next Books & Brews program, Christmas in Hawaiʻi. La Krisamaka, Mele Kalikimaka, Merry Christmas are all things to say on a bright Hawaiian Christmas Day! Books & Brews: Christmas in Hawaiʻi will feature an archival tour that highlights the beginnings and traditions of Christmas on the islands. Then get into the holiday spirit with handcrafted, spiked eggnog, cookie decorating, and ornament making with “Santa’s Tutu.” A ticket to this exclusive event on Saturday, December 13, 2025 from 2:30pm to 5:00pm includes: a two-station tour, one drink, light pūpū, and a holiday surprise. Additional beverages will be available for purchase. Tickets are $40 for members and $50 for nonmembers per person and are available at https://bit.ly/HHSBooksBrewsChristmas

In the Reading Room, explore the diary entries of Alexander Liholiho’s (Kamehameha IV) journal from 1850 and learn about the humble beginnings of Mary Dominis’ children’s ball to today’s Honolulu Hale’s City Lights. Listen to the progression of Christmas music from the first Christmas carol translated into ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi to the hapa haole music of Bing Crosby. Guests will encounter extraordinary newspapers, personal accounts, and illustrated menus offering a glimpse into the season of giving.

Then celebrate HHS’ own holiday traditions on the lānai. Eat and make merry with handcrafted, spiked eggnog while crafting your personal keepsake ornament. Decorate your own holiday cookie with Tutu. As the day approaches dusk, walk through the twinkles of Honolulu City Lights located right across the street. Join us for an afternoon of yuletide celebrations. Come sip, snack, and learn about Hawaiʻi’s history.
